Behaviour Consultations

Dogs are spectacular in their ability to learn our language and adapt their behaviour to live in the human world. Occasionally, there can be a misinterpretation, a communication blockage or a need misunderstood that can lead to a behavioural concern. I work closely with your vets as it is necessary to ensure that underlying health concerns are not the root cause of the concern. Your vet can refer you to me, alternatively we can have an informal chat via my free phone consultation service to establish whether it is a behaviour concern or a training issue. I do ask that with all behaviur concerns you have had a check up with your vet prior to our formal sessions.

Behaviour work takes an hollistic approach to consider all factors that may contribute to the behaviour in question and develop a management and training plan to assist in rectifying the behaviour.

A behaviour concern is defined as a pattern of behaviour that is performed excessively or inappropriately that has a negative effect on your dog's welfare and inhibits the household's ability to happily coexist with the dog.

Some of the most common behavioural concerns we can help with include:

- Separation Anxiety

- Reactivity (Barking, lunging etc)

- Excessive Barking

- Destructive Behaviour

- Inappropriate Urination

-  Fear and phobias

- Aggression

How Does It Work?

Behaviour therapy is a journey and not a quick fix. Initially, you will need to book a block of three sessions to get you started.

Before Your First Session

Upon booking your will receive a booking in questionnaire. It is recommended that you provide as much detail as you can in all fields.

Its is also recommended that you get a  health check with your vet to exclude and causitory pain or underlying health conditions.

Session One.

This takes place in the home. It consists of a behavioural assessment, during which I will observe your dog's behaviour in the environment, establish trust with your dog as well as take a detailed history of the behavioural concern and the dog's lifestyle.

A foundational management plan will be formed, part of which will include lifestyle changes, diet assessment and training plan. Actionable points on the training plan will be demonstrated to you.

Following your session you will receive a written report that can be passed to your vet.

Sessions two and three

Sessions two and three involves a top up behavioural assessment and feedback session. Your dog's behaviour will be observed and your training so far will be assessed and feedback given before we can build anymore progress into the management and training plan. You will be asked to give feedback on how you feel it is going and how well you feel your dog is taking to the training as well as any problems that you have encountered.

If the foundational training has gone well you will be taught and given the next stages of the plan to build on the foundations. We can also make adjustments to the plan depending on how you have got on.

Follow Up

Between each session you have access to telephone or messaging support from me, should you need to ask any questions you are encouraged to check in regularly.

Following your third session we will discuss the way forward with the management and training plan and further sessions will be discussed. Additional sessions can be booked individually or you will be invited to top-up a further 3 bookings.

In some circumstances you may feel that with the plan you are confident to continue yourself.

In many cases three sessions are enough to set up for success. In most cases three sessions should be considered as a minimum.

Appointment Time: 1hr  to 2hrs

Block booking 3 sessions ……..£245.00

Please note that we work closely with your veterinary surgery to ensure that any underlying health conditions are ruled out as a major cause for the behaviour of concern. We always provide a written report, which can then be passed to your vet for your dogs medical records.
